Resume Sibongile Mngoma Soweto born Sibongile Mngoma was, at a very young age described, as a ‘natural diva’. Schooled in Kwa-Zulu Natal, she completed a BA degree at the University of Cape Town, and went on to receive honors in Drama Education. She also studied opera at the UCT College of Music, under the tutelage of Sarita Stern and Angelo Gobbatto. Miss Mngoma has also studied under the tutelage of great divas like Mirella Freni and Shirley Verritt. The latter, she worked with at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Italy, where she was also awarded top honours. She was one the finalists in the Rolex Foundation Mentor\Protege programme for 2004\2005 with Jessey Norman. She has performed in all the major opera houses in South Africa with most major orchestras. Operatic roles include Zandile in Temmingh’s ENOCH PROPHET OF GOD, Clara in Gershwin’s PORGY & BESS, First Boy in Mozart’s MAGIC FLUTE, Mimi in LA BOHEME, Zerlina in Mozart’s DON GIOVANNI, Contessa in Mozart’s LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, Donna Elvira in Mozart’s DON GIOVANNI, Michaela in Bizet’s CARMEN, Arbace in Bach’s CATONE IN UTICA, Dido in Purcell’s DIDO AND EANEAS, Didon in Piccinni’s DIDON, Nandi and First lady in Khumalo’s PRINCESS MAGOGO, Idamante in Mozart’s IDOMENEO. Oratorio work includes Handel’s Messiah, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Mozart Requiem, Brahms’ Requiem Mass, Mozart’s Coronation Mass, Purcell’s Pulcinella, Khumalo’s UShaka kaSenzangakhona in which she was the soprano soloist for the Sony Music CD recording. She also sang with Abel Motsoadi at the Grahamstown Festival, and appeared in the Debut with Mimi. Choral works include solo appearances at the Caltex Massed Choir Festivals, both in Cape Town and Johannesburg, SABC concerts and The Last Night of the Proms in Durban, Pietermaritzburg , Johannesburg and Cape Town. She took part in the Two Nations Celebrate concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London. She performed at an international conference in Cannes. At the beginning of 1997 she was one of the three soloists in PACT’S Rodgers and Hammerstein concerts. She was also a soloist in the Johannesburg’s Civic Theatre’s Andrew Lloyd-Webber in Concert series, which ran for six weeks. She wrote and performed in the show Woza! A celebration of SA Musicals at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre. She presented a Voice/Piano Recital at the State Theatre, Pretoria with Russian pianist Galina Ryjikova. In Italy where she has been working consistently for the pastthree years, she has sung the roles of Arbace in Bach’s CATONE IN UTICA, Didon in Puccinni’s DIDON, Idamante in Mozart’s IDOMENEO, Donna Elvira in Mozart’s DON GIOVANNI. She returned from a very successful tour of Europe with the production of Mzilikazi Khumalo’s USHAKA KASENZANGAKHONA, where she also worked with world famous conductor Dennis Russell Davies. This year only: She is part of about 40 concerts for ATKV – Afrikiti concerts – touring the whole of South Africa and also Namibia. She is in high demand at corporate functions, and performs regularly for the likes of CHAMSA, the BRETT KEBBLE ARTS AWARDS, and various other Gala evenings. She was chosen with Sibongile Khumalo and the Afro Tenors to participate in none other than Maestro Pavarotti’s ‘Farewell to Africa’ Tour, and got high recognition for that, from the Maestro himself. After a very successful HUISGENOOT SKOUSPEL, she has been asked to participate for the 3rd year in this event. She was asked by none other than world famous singer, Jessye Norman, to participate in 10 days of Masterclasses in July 2005, and that will end with a Gala concert in Geneva. She has released a CD – ‘GLIMMER OF HOPE’, and as a result 2 nominations in the SAMA awards followed. She was part of THE MESSIAH this year, with Jannie Moolman and Zwai Bala, and performed at the annual Rhema Church Conference She also does a regular weekend slot for Classic FM. Sibongile Mngoma has made name for herself as one of the very few completely cross over artists in South Africa. She easily moves from opera to classical to jazz in the same concert, hence she has become a very popular feature in the market. She has won two major awards – The Standard Bank young Artist Award and the FNB Vita Award for best Opera Female Lead. End |
